The Latest Wind Test

Why is it that voters want politicians who will actually keep their promises and be true to their convictions, yet seem to send just the opposite message to the candidates? It seems that most voters are mainly concerned with the latest polls and focus groups and are more interested in getting behind this candidate or that candidate based on whether or not he or she can beat the other parties nominee. Since when have Americans decided that testing the wind is the first step in deciding which candidate they support, when they seem to want exactly the opposite from elected leadership.
When you look at Guliani, you see a donkey wearing an elephant costume, yet the prevailing theory is that he has to be the nominee because he can beat Clinton.  In fact, his own theme in Iowa commercial spots is "The Candidate Democrats Just Don't Want to Run Against."
Then you find Romney, the guy a lot of radical conservatives seem to find attractive(including myself until recently), who is courting the far right. However, upon close examination, I find that he tends to ride the fence on some key issues, and it could possibly be said that his recent transformations appear to be aimed at courting the far right (folks like myself) and not losing ground with the moderates either.
When it comes to Thompson, well, let's just say that I truly have serious doubts that there are any Reagans left to find from Hollywood. So, I found myself in a quandry over who else there was to support. Should I support my first initial choice even before I was sure he would run, or should I immediately assume like all the rest that he doesn't stand a chance on a cold day in "you-know-where" and go for a guy who had a better chance like Romney.
I began researching the positions of this candidate who stands for everything that we conservatives believe in and found that not only was he someone who brought common sense to politics, but he is also frank, sincere, and has a vision for America. So, why is it that so many conservatives seem to be afraid to support this man who has been elected and re-elected to the same job that was formerly Bill Clinton's and has a clear, proven track record and a vision for the future of this country. (Yes I am referring to Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas.) I believe it is because many of us are to ready to test the wind rather than vote our conscience, yet, I believe that if more of us were to follow our convictions, the issue of testing the wind would no longer be an issue. For I believe that Mike Huckabee is the candidate who can energize the base and lead us to victory in 2008 because if we campaign on the issues there is no way we can lose.
